Nick Hampshire Biography

Nick was born in London in 1957. As a child, he was always surrounded by fine paintings, this proved to be his inspiration in later years.

The family moved from London in 1966 to Bettenham Manor in Biddenden to start a new life in rural Kent. Nick married his wife Beverley in 1986 and they have two children, Luke and Danielle. The family moved again following the death of Nick’s father in 1996 and they now live in Sissinghurst.

After leaving school, Nick received formal training from a local artist. This was followed by a two year apprenticeship as a picture restorer. In 1976, he started his own business dealing in, and restoring, oil paintings. As time passed, Nick began to fully understand the techniques used by the great artists.

Nick has continued his business to the present day and specialises in Victorian art and artists.

In 2003, Nick started to diversify into forming his own style of painting with a view to becoming more involved in putting together  a portfolio of his own art. In 2004 Nick had his first solo exhibition, which was a near sell-out. He joined the Maidstone Art Society 15 years ago, where he was lucky enough to exhibit his work at the Society’s annual exhibitions.

Painting in the style of the Victorian landscape/seascape painters and calling on forty years of experience as an oil painting restorer, Nick uses traditional techniques following closely in the footsteps of the 19th century artists.
